Get to know Jose, our CTO

What was your background before eSIM Go?

I've spent my entire career working in the telecom industry. First in a niche software/product vendor where I started as an apprentice and left 11 years later as the CTO. It was here I learnt most of my technical skills around telecom protocols and network architectures, being exposed to products that drew on everything from archaic 1970’s analogue systems to the latest bleeding edge technology.

In early 2016 I decided to start my own telco consultancy working with service providers around the globe, helping them build, upgrade and maintain their VoIP and SMS networks. It was through this that I got to know some of the eSIM Go team I work with today. It also allowed me to learn about the latest cloud-based services, and how to enable easy deployment and growth – now a key part of eSIM Go’s offerings.

When did you first discover eSIM?

I was aware of eSIM being a new standard back in 2016 but didn’t take a close personal interest until probably 2018 when OEMs like Apple, Samsung and Google started putting eSIM capability in their phones and tablets – and it was clear it was becoming a real thing consumers could actually use. As such, it was simple to dive into the tech in 2020 when the idea for eSIM Go was first conceived.

What's your role at eSIM Go?

As CTO I oversee all technical aspects of the business. But I have a great team of department heads who look after IT, development, tech ops, customer support and the day-to-day operations in these areas. I try to focus on more of the higher-level decisions and work with our products team on how we might realise their next ideas. But I still enjoy getting my hands dirty and writing the odd bit of code here and there if I’m allowed!

How would you describe the culture of the company?

For me it’s all about innovation. One of the things we’ve done in our Dev teams is purposely set aside regular time for our engineers to ‘do cool stuff’ and be free to play and experiment with ideas they have. Some of our best product features have come from this, and that’s one part of what makes our products and services unique in the market.

Where do you see yourself and eSIM Go five years from now?

Hopefully cementing our leadership in the eSIM market, both in the travel industry where we’re already making big waves, but also in other industries and sectors across the globe where our easy-to-use, fast-to-market eSIM solutions have infinite use cases. I’d like to still be here doing what I do today, enjoying leading the technical side of the business, working with a passionate and proud team.

What do you do to unwind?

Anyone who’s been on a video call with me will know I have a mild addiction to Lego Technic! My collection is proudly on display behind my desk and always makes for a good ice-breaker with new customers or colleagues. I claim it’s for my two young boys, but the reality is I definitely still enjoy being a big kid and building/playing with it as well. Aside from that I make as much time as possible to spend with my young family, getting out for walks with our dog and generally enjoying each other's company.
